Press Release Regarding the NAOOA's Lawsuit Dismissal
Lawsuit against Veronica Foods Dismissed
On
November 2, 2017, Veronica Foods, a 100
year old family owned and operated olive oil company in California triumphed
along with codefendants: D’Avolio, O live Brooklyn, and The Crushed Olive when
the North American Olive Oil Association’s baseless allegations leveled in a
lawsuit at the family business and the stores it supplies was dismissed.
A spokesperson at
Veronica Foods responded to the news, stating, “Our mission remains consistent
as we continue to drive transparency surrounding existing olive oil standards
by educating consumers through cutting-edge scientific research. We believe the
NAOOA’s self-serving allegations were an attempt to interfere with our long
standing effort to improve consumer understanding about industry standards including
accuracy in olive oil labeling. We would like to thank all who supported and
continue to support our mission to raise awareness.”
On November 2, 2017 the Court dismissed the entire
case against Veronica Foods and its retailers and ordered the case
closed. It rejected the North American Olive Oil Association’s challenge
to Veronica's Ultra Premium quality mark. It also held that there was no
support for the NAOOA's, "Conclusory statements that the actions at issue
resulted in lost sales or damaged reputations."
The motion to dismiss the lawsuit against Veronica
Foods follows a recent NAOOA lawsuit against Dr. Oz which was also dismissed. In
a publicized response, Dr. Oz commented, "We value the confidence our
viewers place in us every day, including this program which fairly reported on
the mislabeling of extra-virgin olive oil.”
